(Mat 1:1-17) Abraham, Judah & Tamar, Nahshon, Boaz & Ruth, David & Bathsheba, Solomon, Jechoniah the exile, Zerubbabel, Jospeh & Mary, Jesus

(Mat 1:18-20,23) Mary, before she came together with Joseph, was found to be with child from the Holy Spirit. Child is Immanuel God with us.

(Mat 1:21-25) Name given by an angel ‘Jesus’ means ‘Yahweh saves’ because he will save his people from their sins.

(Mat 2:5-6) The shepherd king of God’s people that the wise men seek will be born in Bethlehem according to the Scriptures.

(Mat 2:12-13,22) Through dreams an angel warns both the wise men and Joseph regarding dangers to the child’s life on three occasions.

(Mat 2:13-15) God preserves Jesus in Egypt, then brings him up out of Egypt. Just as God did for his firstborn son Israel Gen 45:7; Exo 4:22

(Mat 3:1-4) John the Baptizer is the wilderness prophet figure in Isaiah 40 announcing the coming of God as well as being like Elijah.

(Mat 3:10-12) Axe to root of trees & then burned. Baptism of Spirit & fire is coming. Threshing floor,wheat, chaff,fire. Eschatology themes.

(Mat 3:16-17) Jesus baptized, heavens open, Spirit descends & rests on him, voice from heaven. Davidic king Ps 2 & suffering servant Isa 42

(Mat 4:1-2) Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil. 40 days of fasting.

(Mat 4:3-11) Temptations have connections with Israel’s temptations in wilderness as in Deut. Jesus answers quoting Deut. God’s son- no sin

(Mat 4:12-17) Jesus goes to Galilee to fulfils prophet Isa 9:1-2. A light shining in the shadow of death, the lands of Zebulun & Naphtali.

(Mat 5:3-11) Blessed are those who are poor, mourn, meek, hunger & thirst, merciful, pure, peacemakers, persecuted. Theirs is the kingdom.

(Mat 5:17-19) Jesus did not come to abolish the Law or the Prophets but rather to fulfill them by filling them out with their full meaning.

(Mat 5:21-48) Not minimal requirement but rather maximum application. Murder, anger, adultery, lust, oaths, speaking truth, justice, grace.

(Mat 6:1-18) Give, pray and fast not for the audience & praise of men but rather before the face of God alone, seeking his pleasure alone.

(Mat 6:9-13) Father, name holy, kingdom come, will be done, give bread, forgive debts, lead not into temptation but deliver from evil. Amen.

(Mat 6:19-21) Do not lay up treasures on earth, where moth & rust destroy, thieves break in & steal, but in heaven. Heart is with treasure.

(Mat 6:32-33) Gentiles seek after food & clothing. Our Father knows our needs. Seek first his kingdom & righteousness & other things given.

(Mat 7:11) If fathers on earth are good to their children then how much more so the goodness of our Father in heaven toward us.

(Mat 7:13-14) Wide is the gate & easy is the way to destruction for many. Narrow is the gate & hard is the way to life for a few.

(Mat 7:17,24-27) Healthy & diseased trees produce good & bad fruit. Houses build on rock or sand. Rain fell, floods rose, winds blew.

(Mat 8:3,8,17) Jesus touches a leper, a centurion believes Jesus’ word is sufficient, healings fulfill Isaiah 53:4 He carried our sickness.

(Mat 8:26) Jesus rose and rebuked the winds and the sea, and there was a great calm. Psa 107:23-31. Excellent!

(Mat 9:1-7) Sins forgiven, lame man is raised, people fear and glorify God.

(Mat 9:17) The new wine of the gospel needs new wineskins of understanding. It cannot be contained within the old ways of the Pharisees.

(Mat 9:18f) Woman with bleeding healed, Jesus raises dead girl by taking her hand & speaking to her. Blind see, demons cast out.

(Mat 10:1f) Apostles to raise dead, cleanse lepers, cast out demons, trust God for provisions and words. Wise serpents & gentle doves.

(Mat 10:28-31) Fear not men who kill body but God who can destroy body & soul. Hairs are numbered. Valued more than sparrows.

(Mat 11:16-19) Children refuse to play funerals & mourn in response to John’s ‘repent’. Refuse to play weddings & joy in response to Jesus.

(Mat 11:20-24) This generation worse than Sodom, Tyre and Babylon. Capernaum will not ascend the heights of heaven but the depths of Hades.

(Mat 11:25-30) Gospel hidden from some by Father & revealed to some by Son. Weary invited to come and receive rest.

(Mat 12:7-14) God desires mercy not sacrifice. Illustrated by Jesus’ healing on the Sabbath.

(Mat 12:15f) Jesus’ ministry is Isa 42, casting of demons means kingdom is breaking in, 3 days of burial, greater than Jonah & Solomon.

(Mat 13:11-13) Parables reveal secrets of the kingdom to some while hiding truth from others. To one who has more will be given. Isa 6:9-10

(Mat 13:31-33) Kingdom like a mustard seed or yeast in bread. Slow but permeating growth.

(Mat 13:34-35) Jesus speaks in parables to fulfill the prophets. C.f. Psa 78:2

(Mat 14:14) When Jesus went ashore and saw a great crowd, he had compassion on them and healed their sick.

(Mat 14:25) During the night Jesus came walking on the sea like the LORD does in the Old Testament e.g. Job 9:8

(Mat 14:36) Many people implored Jesus that they might only touch the fringe of his garment. And as many as touched were made well.

(Mat 15:11) Not what goes into the mouth that defiles a person, but what comes out of the mouth from the heart.

(Mat 15:21-31) Jesus has compassion even toward Gentiles. Mute speak, lame raised, blind see. They glorify the God of Israel.

(Mat 16:16-17) Peter said, "You are the Christ, the Son of the living God." Revealed to him not y man but by the Father.

(Mat 16:21) Jesus tells disciples he must go to Jerusalem and suffer many things, be killed and on the third day be raised.

(Mat 16:24) Jesus told his disciples, "If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me.

(Mat 17:2-5) Jesus transfigured, face like the sun, clothes white as light, cloud of presence, voice from heaven, my son, pleased, listen.

(Mat 18:3) Unless you turn and become like children you will never enter the kingdom of heaven.

(Mat 18:7-9) Woe to the one by whom the temptation comes! Cut off hand or foot or be cut off into hell. Pluck out eye.

(Mat 18:22) Jesus said to forgive not seven times but seventy seven times. If God requires this then he will do so toward us as well.

(Mat 19:26) With man salvation is impossible but with God all things are possible.

(Mat 20:18-19) Going up to Jerusalem. Son of Man handed over to the Gentiles to be mocked, flogged and crucified. Raised on third day.

(Mat 20:22) Jesus to drink the cup of suffering. Disciples to do so likewise.

(Mat 20:26-28) Be servants even as the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve and to give his life as a ransom for many."

(Mat 20:30,34) Two blind men call "Have mercy on us, Son of David!" Jesus has compassion toward them.

(Mat 21:5) Jesus riding into Jerusalem on a donkey fulfills Zec 9:9

(Mat 21:19) Barren fig tree is cursed for unfruitfulness. A picture of Israel’s rejection and judgment in rejecting Jesus.

(Mat 22:7) The king was angry, and he sent his army and destroyed those murderers and burned their city. 70 A.D.

(Mat 22:13) A picture of judgment is being bound hand and foot and cast into the outer darkness with weeping and gnashing of teeth.

(Mat 22:14) Many are called but few are chosen.

(Mat 22:30) Marriage belongs to this age only – not the age to come. Age to come characterized by eternal life.

(Mat 23:1) Seven woes on hypocrites, blind guides, dirty bowls, whitewashed tombs who neglect justice, mercy & faithfulness.

(Mat 23:37-39) Jesus mourns over Jerusalem. Desired to gather them as a hen her brood. Unwilling. Will become desolate 70 A.D.

(Mat 24:4-14) Birth pains of end. False teaching, wars, famines,earthquakes, persecution, many will fall away,lawlessness, gospel proclaimed

(Mat 24:15-21) Fall of Jerusalem in 70 A.D. but with an eye toward the final tribulation of which it is a type as 587 B.C. was for prophets.

(Mat 24:22) The tribulation that started during the lives of disciples & continues will be cut short by Jesus’ coming for sake of the elect.

(Mat 24:29-30) Tribulation then sun & moon darkened, stars fall, the sign of Jesus’ return on the clouds Dan 7:13 with power and glory.

(Mat 24:31) Then he will send out his angels with a loud trumpet call, and they will gather his elect from one end of heaven to the other.

(Mat 24:29-31) Order is tribulation then cosmic signs of return then rapture.

(Mat 24:51;25:10;25:30) Cast out, darkness, weeping and gnashing of teeth.

(Mat 25:21,23) Well done, good and faithful servant. Enter into the joy of your master.

(Mat 25:31-32) Son of Man will come in his glory, sit on his glorious throne, separate nations as a shepherd separates sheep from the goats.

(Mat 26:6-13) Jesus anointed by a woman who loved him in preparation for his burial.

(Mat 26:28-29) The cup is the blood of the covenant, poured out for many for forgiveness of sins. Not drink again until kingdom comes.

(Mat 26:31) All disciples will fall away. Strike the shepherd and sheep of the flock will be scattered. C.f Zec 13:7 Mat 26:15, Zec 11:12-13

(Mat 26:39,42,44) Three times. "My Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me; nevertheless, not as I will, but as you will."

(Mat 26:64) From now on you will see the Son of Man seated at the right hand of Power and coming on the clouds of heaven." C.f. Dan 7:13

(Mat 27:2) Jesus bound and handed over to the Gentiles.

(Mat 27:19) Pilate’s wife sent word, "Have nothing to do with that righteous man for I have suffered much because of him today in a dream."

(Mat 27:20-22) Crowd asks for Barabbas to be released and Jesus to be destroyed.

(Mat 27:28-31) Jesus stripped, scarlet robe, crown of thorns, reed, mocked, spat, led out to be crucified.

(Mat 27:35) When they had crucified him, they divided his garments among them by casting lots. C.f. Psa 22:18.

(Mat 27:45-54) Darkness over the land, temple curtain torn top to bottom, earthquake, tombs open, Jesus cried in loud voice., yielded spirit

(Mat 27:52-53) Tombs opened at death. Bodies raised at Jesus’ resurrection and appear to many in the holy city.

(Mat 27:57-61,66) Jesus is placed in a tomb by Joseph & women. Jewish leaders seal the tomb & set a guard.

(Mat 28:1-10) Great earthquake. Angel of the Lord descended from heaven and rolls away stone. He is raised. Will be seen in Galilee. Joy.

(Mat 28:16) Disciples go to Galilee to the mountain to which Jesus had directed them. They see him and worship.

(Mat 28:18-20) All authority given. Make disciples of all nations, baptizing and teaching to obey. He is with us always to end of the age.
